Five go Lambing

Spring is in the air and lambs are starting to be born on Church Farm. It was all hands to the deck this week on livestock as we officially had the first lamb of the year born on the last Sunday of March.

We have been seeing our Ewes waddle among the field of Long Bottoms for a while now and they have started to produce a new generation of Lleyn and Black Mountain sheep. Mostly they are left to lamb on their own as naturally as possible but the livestock team are constantly monitoring them in case they need to step in and help.

To date we have around 20 lambs, some twins and even a set of triplets. Unfortunately sometimes this means a lamb will be orphaned as a single Ewe can only cope with feeding a maximum of two lambs herself. Sometimes an Ewe will only be able to feed one. On these occasions we are able to bottle feed the lambs ourselves on the farm.

Once the lambs have been born, the mother and little one(s) are moved to a shelter for bonding purposes. When this is done, they are then moved to another field and can be found on the farm in the Beard’s Oak field. Don’t forget over the coming Easter period you can come and help bottle feed the lambs yourselves. Check out the events page www.churchfarmardeley.co.uk for more information and get in touch with one of our friendly farm hands to book you in.
